What do we do in therapy? It’s my first time.

We talk. It’s that simple and that complicated. Usually, we start with having you describe what’s bothering you and then talk a bit about what all might be helpful as part of your treatment. It’s not just what we talk about, it’s also how we talk about it. The hope is to fundamentally shift how we understand our struggle and how to work through it.

How long does it last?

Most people don’t like this answer: it depends on what your’re struggling with and how the work goes. Sometimes, it’s shorter than expected and sometimes a bit longer than anticipated. The goal is to have treatment build your self-efficacy.

How frequently do we meet?

Typically, we meet weekly. Depending on what we’re working on or how you’re doing, we can meet with less frequency.

What are the pros and cons?

Upon finding a good fit and understanding a problem, people who engage in therapy tend to benefit. However, therapy can also bring up painful emotions and can feel challenging since we’re often talking about difficult things. I strongly encourage people to share their experience of therapy as it’s happening rather than feel they’re alone in this struggle. As indicated earlier, psychotherapy is based on the premise that you’re the author and that it is your story. How the story gets written is first guided by your words and second, by our collaboration as author and editor.
